Lesson 3

Bilingual salary positioning: top of band + growth path

Mission link: express a firm compensation floor without sounding rigid, entitled, or disconnected from the Brightlands context.

Tangible win: by the end of this lesson, you should be able to say your real salary stance in both English and Dutch in under 30 seconds.

What changed?

Your stance is no longer “upper half of the range.” It is now much sharper:

The Brightlands vacancy publishes a gross monthly range of €3,350–€6,100, which is €40,200–€73,200 gross annually. Your stated floor of €70k/year equals about €5,833 gross/month, which places you very near the top of their published band. That means your negotiation is fundamentally about top-of-band placement plus explicit growth mechanics, not about a generic mid-band fit. [1]

The positioning rule

Do not argue from desire. Argue from deliberate trade-off.

You are not saying, “I want more money.” You are saying, “I know what my market alternatives are, I understand this role sits in a different environment, and I still need the move to make long-term sense.” That is a much stronger frame.

Your key message in English

Short version

For me, this move only makes sense if the base salary is above €70k gross annually and there is a clear growth path after year one.

Diplomatic version

I understand that Brightlands is not a private-sector compensation environment, and I am not benchmarking this role one-to-one against a €90k market package. But if I make this move, it needs to work as a deliberate long-term choice. For me, that means a base salary above €70k gross annually, together with a clear path for growth after year one.

Jouw kernboodschap in het Nederlands

Korte versie

If they ask for a number

Use case English Dutch
Concrete positioning Concretely, I would expect to be positioned at the very top end of the published range, ideally with clarity on how growth is handled after year one.
If asked too early I would first like to understand the final scope and expectations a bit better, but for me the move only makes sense above €70k gross annually with a clear growth path.
Growth-path probe If we start near the top of the band, how does further salary growth typically work after that?

Best follow-up questions

  1. English: Given my profile, how would you see me being positioned within the published salary scale?
Nederlands: Gezien mijn profiel, hoe zouden jullie mij binnen de gepubliceerde salarisschaal positioneren?
  2. English: If we start near the top of the band, what does the growth path usually look like after year one?
  3. English: Is there normally a formal review moment after the first year to revisit role scope, level, and compensation?
  4. English: Does salary growth in this role depend mainly on tenure, impact, broader responsibility, or movement into another scale?

  2. Say the short Dutch version once from memory.
  3. Ask the growth-path question in Dutch without looking.
  4. Ask the review-timing question in English without looking.
Boundary: do not soften your floor by volunteering a lower fallback too early. The negotiation can only move well if your real threshold stays clear in your own mind.
