Lesson 5

Bilingual lesson: the Brightlands role may map to CAO-NU — handle it as a hypothesis

Mission link: use the CAO-NU possibility to ask sharper compensation questions without claiming certainty you do not yet have.

Tangible win: by the end of this lesson, you should be able to explain why a CAO-NU link is plausible, why it is not yet proven, and what exact question forces clarity.

The finding

English: I did not find a clearly published Brightlands-wide grading matrix. What I did find is this: the specific Business Developer Engineering vacancy had a public salary range of €3,350–€6,100 gross/month, and the employer context strongly resembles university-style employment conditions. That makes a CAO-NU-style link plausible, but not yet confirmed. [1]

Why the CAO-NU hypothesis is reasonable

  1. Vacancy context: the role is tied to Maastricht University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  2. Benefits pattern: the vacancy mentions ABP pension, holiday allowance, and a structural year-end bonus — a pattern that resembles university employment conditions. [1]
  3. UM evidence: Maastricht University says its employment conditions are aligned with the CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten (CAO-NU). [2]
  4. CAO evidence: CAO-NU remuneration explicitly references salary scales in Appendix A, holiday allowance of 8%, and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. [3]

Why you still must not overclaim it

The vacancy range does not map cleanly to one obvious CAO-NU scale. Using the salary table the user surfaced, the lower end is around scale 8/10 territory and the upper end sits below the maximum of scale 12. That means the range resembles parts of CAO-NU, but does not by itself prove the role is formally scale X, step Y. The only clean way to know is to ask HR directly.

What you can say What you should not say
This role may be linked to a CAO-NU/UFO scale. This role is definitely scale 12.
The vacancy and benefits pattern make a university-style scale plausible. Because ABP is mentioned, the scale must be public and fixed.
I would like to understand which scale and step you are considering. I already know the exact scale, so please justify it.

The exact question to ask

English

Is this role formally linked to a CAO-NU/UFO salary scale, and if so, which scale and step are you considering for this position?

Nederlands

Best follow-up questions

  1. English: Is the published band directly derived from a CAO-NU/UFO scale, or is it a broader external range?
  2. English: If you are considering the role near the top of a scale, what is the usual path for further growth after that?
  3. English: Is growth mainly step-based, performance-based, role-based, or linked to movement into another scale?
  4. English: If I start near the top, is there normally a review after the first year to revisit level and compensation?

How this affects your ask

English: The CAO-NU hypothesis does not weaken your salary position. It sharpens the conversation. Instead of only asking for “more,” you are asking for scale clarity, step clarity, and growth-path clarity.

Retrieval drill

  1. Say in English why the CAO-NU link is plausible.
  3. Ask the scale-and-step question in Dutch from memory.
  4. Ask the growth-path question in English from memory.
Primary sources to revisit: the Brightlands vacancy mirror for the exact band and benefits, Maastricht University’s employment-conditions page, and the CAO-NU remuneration page. Those three together are the backbone of the hypothesis. [1] [2] [3]
